Since none of the current technologies have proven to be cost-effective short term. This means that the market will not invest in them until it was too late for significant alternative energy sources in force when the hydro-carbon supplies run low enough that prices are no longer restrict the size of the economy drastically. Also, it is a cheap way for governments seem to do something about global warming, etc., while at the same time, subsidies for campaign contributors. (This may not be important to you, but it is the Politicians make the decisions)
